A Wine Day in Tuscany: Because Some Afternoons Are Made to Last

Two women sharing wine at a Tuscan vineyard lunch

There is a ritual in Italy that appears in no travel guide — the lunch that starts at 1pm and only ends when the sun is low. With good wine, fresh bread and the right people, time stops in a way that only happens in Tuscany.

The Art of the Pranzo Lungo

Italians understand something we have forgotten: a meal is not just food, it is a ceremony. The long lunch can last three, four hours. Not out of excess, but out of intention. To be present. To talk. To laugh.

The Perfect Itinerary

10:00am — Arrive in Montalcino. Espresso in the central square while the vineyards wake up.
11:30am — Visit a family winery. Stories, barrel rooms, reserve Brunellos.
1:00pm — The table is set outside. White linen, wildflowers, a view across the cypress hills.
5:00pm — Nobody wants to leave.

The Look for the Day

For a day at a winery, balance is everything. Our suggestion: linen trouser in Warm Terracotta — the colour literally matches the Tuscan earth — with a white cotton blouse and leather loafers.

The best wine is the one you drink with the people you love, in a place where time does not exist.

What to Taste

  • Brunello di Montalcino — the king of Italian wines
  • Vernaccia di San Gimignano — fresh white, perfect for lunch
  • Chianti Classico Riserva — for the purists
  • Vin Santo with cantucci — to finish as it should be done

Set aside at least one full day for this — and dress to last.
